Here’s the recording of the Author’s Table interview I did with Lisa-Marie Cabrelli, Ph.D. of The Heroine Society about the writing of my fiction-prize-winning story Meeting Death, which was published this month in The Story Room Magazine. It’s an adapted chapter from my novel, Eleusis, which is currently being considered by several small presses. Wish us luck. If you haven’t read the story yet, Lisa-Marie begins by reading it aloud.
My incredibly talented bestie, Nan Tepper of The Next Write Thing, Wham Bam Thank You Slam, and Styling Your Stack fame, edited it so you don’t have to sit through the technical difficulties I had with sound - among other things. She’s a genius.
What an experience, having my own story read to me, feeling into someone else’s interpretation. Just wow. Sometimes, when authors read their own work, it can be… disappointing. If you’ve ever attended those writer conference panels that start with authors reading (looking at you, AWP), you know what I mean.
After the story, we had a deep discussion about threshold guardians (in literature and real life), the craft choices made while editing draft after draft, and my own meditative writing process, which I call “taking it for a walk.”
I’d like to thank everyone who showed up in person (!!!!) to support. I felt you there, and I was very moved. Being part of a supportive community like this is one of the best parts of Substackland. While I saw the chat moving, I couldn’t read much, so I’d love it if you put some comments on the post now.
On Sunday, I’ll be a featured speaker in a panel and discussion with all the other writers in the August issue, including Di Kersey, whose essay, She Got Her Hair Done, won the non-fiction prize. The first 30 minutes of the recording (the panel part) will be posted on The Heroine Society soon after.
